20 years ago – 1992

Early in May 1991, a group of Fort Walton Beach area men and women with similar interests in Civil War history formed the Walton Guard, First Florida Infantry, Company D. The company depicts the actual Walton Guard, whose Civil War mission was to protect the narrows now known as Fort Walton Landing.

10 years ago – 2002

Elisa McNabney, a 35-year-old woman wanted in California for the murder of her husband likely fled Northwest Florida after living and working in the Destin area for several weeks, law enforcement officials believed. McNabney’s disappearance and the murder of her husband had garnered television coverage from programs including “Good Morning America,” “Inside Edition” and “America’s Most Wanted.”
